1896 Summer Olympics Events: Athletics at the 1896 Summer Olympics $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: At the 1896 Summer Olympics, twelve athletics events were contested. All of the events except the marathon were held in the Panathinaiko Stadium, which was also the finish for the marathon. Events were held on 6 April, 7 April, 9 April, and 10 April 1896 (all dates are according to the Gregorian calendar). 64 athletes, all men, from ten nations competed. This made athletics the most international of the nine sports at the 1896 Games. The American team of 10, which featured only one national champion, was dominant, taking 9 of the 12 titles. No world records were set, as few international top competitors had turned up. In addition, the curves of the track were very tight, making fast times in the running events virtually impossible. The heats of the 100 metres were the first Olympic event to be conducted, and the winner of the first heat, Francis Lane, can thus be considered the first Olympic winner. The first Olympic champion was crowned in the triple jump, Harvard student James Connolly. Connolly also did well in the other jumping events, placing second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Many other athletes were versatile as well. Tom Burke won both the 100 metres and 400 metres, a feat not since repeated, while London-based Australian Edwin Flack won the 800 and 1500 metres races. Robert Garrett, a Princeton student, won two first and two second places. His first title was in the discus throw, an event originating from the Ancient Olympics, but never before held at an international event. Garrett had attempted to train for the event with a 10 kilogram replica of a discus, but had given up as it was too heavy. When he learned the actual competition discus weighed only 2 kilograms, he entered the event after all, and won it, to the d… More: |

Excerpt: 1924 25 Boston Bruins The 1924 25 Boston Bruins season was the team’s first in the NHL . Along with the Montreal Maroons , the Bruins were the first expansion franchise in the NHL and the league s first American-based club. The Bruins finished sixth and last in the league standings. Regular season 1924 25 NHL season Despite problems with the ice plant that threatened the home opener the Bruins started the season out auspiciously, defeating their fellow expansion Maroons squad in a nearly sold out Boston Arena 2-1; the first goal in franchise history was scored by Smokey Harris , while Carson Cooper , who assisted on Harris’ goal, scored the game winner. However, Boston lost its next eleven games, as well as having a seven game losing streak, and finished in the basement. The Bruins had signed veteran West Coast star goaltender Hec Fowler as their netminder, but behind a weak defense, Fowler and backup Howie Lockhart played very poorly and the Bruins were repeatedly shelled, allowing ten goals in a game twice, one of which saw Toronto player Babe Dye score five goals on December 22. The signing of senior league star netminder Doc Stewart and the purchase of Lionel Hitchman helped somewhat, |

1956 Summer Olympics $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in Melbourne, Australia, in 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which could not be held in Australia due to quarantine regulations. Instead, those events were held five months earlier in Stockholm, Sweden, marking the second time that events of the same Olympics were held in different countries. (At the 1920 Summer Olympics in the Antwerp, Belgium, one sailing event had been held in Dutch waters). The 1956 Games were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the first to be held outside Europe, Asia or North America. Melbourne was selected as the host city over bids from Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and six American cities on 28 April 1949, at the 43rd IOC Session in Rome, Italy. The chart’s information below are from the International Olympic Committee Vote History web page. Many members of the IOC were sceptical about Melbourne as an appropriate site. Its location in the Southern Hemisphere was a major concern, since the reversal of seasons would mean the Games were held during the northern winter. This was thought likely to inconvenience athletes from the Northern Hemisphere who were accustomed to resting during their winter. Melbourne was selected, in 1949, to host the 1956 Olympics by a one-vote margin. The first sign of trouble was the revelation that Australian equine quarantine would prevent the country from hosting the equestrian events. Stockholm was selected as the alternate site, so equestrian competition began on 10 June, five and a half months before the rest of the Olympic games were to open, half the world away. The problems of the Melbourne Games were compounded by… More: |

1980s In Japan $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: In Japan during the 1980s, the economy was in a boom. As of March 2010, the unemployment rate in Japan is 4.9%; a very low number compared to the unemployment rate during the height of the 1990s. The following decade would see Japan’s economy decline substantially, giving rise to the name the Lost Decade. America’s economy under Former President George W. Bush had an economy similar to 1980s Japan from 2002 to 2007. The 1980s saw the firm establishment of anime and manga as major industries. Studio Ghibli, arguably the most famous and respected animation studio in Japan, was established by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki in 1985 following the success of Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Newtype, one of the two major anime industry magazines, was started in 1985 as well. Examples of Japanese products created and distributed during the 1980s included Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and classic anime like Astro Boy and Akira. Nintendo came of age offering video arcade games and their famous Family Computer (informally known as Famicom) system. American-based Atari struggled to compete in Japan but they couldn’t defeat the Sega-Nintendo duopoly in the video arcade realm. Future Japanese game designers would cut their teeth during this era playing 8-bit games and end up designing 64-bit and 128-bit video games (for systems like the Nintendo 64, the Sony PlayStation, and the Sony PlayStation 2). Professional wrestling was declining in the 1980s in both Japan and in North America. Even the most predominant men’s and women’s wrestling leagues were losing popularity like America’s World Wrestling Federation. By the 2000s, professional wrestling was relegated to the midnight hours by television broadcasting. However, a f… More: |

In addition to a person wearing a costume , the position is filled by an actual bulldog, the honor (and the title “Handsome Dan”) being transferred to another upon death or retirement. Showing animosity toward people wearing crimson , the color of Harvard uniforms, is a definite plus. Handsome Dan is believed to be the first such live college mascot in America. In 1889, Andrew B. Graves saw a bulldog sitting in front of a New Haven blacksmith shop. Graves was an Englishman in the Yale class of 1892 and a member of the crew team as well as a football tackle. He offered fifty dollars for the dog, and the blacksmith countered with seventy-five. Graves purchased the dog for sixty-five dollars. Excerpt: The 2009 United Football League season — referred to by the professional American football league as the UFL Premiere Season — was the inaugural season of the United Football League. The regular season featured 4 teams playing 6 games each (twice against each of the other teams), and both began and ended at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas (where the Las Vegas Locomotives defeated both the California Redwoods 3017 on October 8 and the New York Sentinels 417 on November 20). Sam Boyd Stadium was also the site of the 2009 UFL Championship Game on November 27, a game that saw the Locomotives defeat the previously unbeaten Florida Tuskers 2017 in overtime. Preparations for the UFL Premiere Season kicked off in the summer with player signings and a draft. Training camps for the players began on September 9 in Casa Grande, Arizona for the Western teams and September 10 in Orlando, Florida for the Eastern teams. The league announced its game schedule in the first week of August, a schedule that features games in teams’ primary cities as well as secondary sites (a few of which are potential future UFL homes). Certain game sites were not finalized, however, and changes were made both before the schedule’s release and after play had begun: During the week of August 10, the four team names and their uniform jerseys were revealed. Each of the uniforms (and the team logos and helmets that were unveiled on October 2) incorporated the UFL’s signature color scheme into their designs, including silver (primary color for the Las Vegas Locomotives), blue (Florida Tuskers), black (New York Sentinels), and lime green and white (California Redwoods). Excerpt: The first stamps that Canada Post released to commemorate an Olympic event were in commemoration of the 1976 Summer Olympics, held in Montreal. The issue date was September 20, 1973 and the issue price was 8 cents. It is noteworthy that the issue date coincides with the opening day of the British North America Philatelic Society meeting in Calgary as both the design and purpose of this stamp promise to make it of interest to philatelists and all Canadian citizens alike. Although there would be other releases to commemorate the Montreal Olympics, the first stamp had a specially designed Montreal logo that featured five interlaced rings crowned with a symbolic “m”. The foundation evoked the pervading Olympic spirit of universal brotherhood while the “m” signified the three tiered winners’ podium symbolizing the glory of the winner and the chivalrous spirit of a well contested victory. In another interpretation at the center of the logo one can discern the track of the Olympic stadium where spectator and competitor are united in the spirit of the games. The 1976 Olympiad for the Physically Disabled, lasting from August 3 to 11, marks the twenty-fifth renewal of the International Stoke Mandeville Games, which take place annually in England except for every fourth year, when they move to the nation staging the Summer Olympics. The site of the competitions will be Centennial Park, a 260-acre (1.1 km) facility in the Borough of Etobicoke, a part o… More: |

Managers: Harold Bodle $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Senior club appearances and goalscounted for the domestic league only.* Appearances (Goals) Harold Bodle (4 October 1920 1 January 2005) was an English association footballer who played as an inside left or wing half. He played for Birmingham City in the top flight and for several clubs in the North of England in the lower divisions of the Football League. He was particularly noted for juggling the ball, a skill he claimed to have perfected as a child by repeatedly kicking a small ball against the sideboard at home. Bodle was born in Woodlands, near Doncaster. He played for Doncaster schoolboys before starting work at Silverwood Colliery where he played for the works team. He also played for Ridgehill Athletic and had trials at Doncaster Rovers and Bradford Park Avenue before signing professional forms for Third Division North side Rotherham United in May 1938. His Rotherham career was brief; after nine games in the Football League and just past his 18th birthday Bodle was transferred to First Division Birmingham for the fee of £2,000. His reaction to the move was quoted thus: “It was a total surprise when manager Reg Freeman pulled me aside at the training ground to tell me of The Blues’ interest. I was so excited that when I went back to the training session I lost concentration and went sliding off onto the gravel edge. When I met up with Blues officials later that day I had both my hands bandaged and found it hard to sign the contract!”Bodle played one first-team game for his new club before the outbreak of the Second World War put an end to League football. He made occasional appearances for the club in wartime competition, as well as guesting for Rotherham and Doncaster, for whom he scored 27 goals. He returned to Birmingham to play … More: |

Excerpt: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth , known in Japan as Gyakuten Kenji ( ? , lit. “Turnabout Prosecutor”) is an adventure video game for the Nintendo DS handheld game console by Capcom . It is a spin-off of the Ace Attorney video game series. The game was released in Japan on May 28, 2009, February 16, 2010 in the United States, February 18, 2010 in Australia and February 19, 2010 in Europe. Gameplay This game is a standard “point and click” adventure , with the player controlling Edgeworth’s movements and what he interacts with. For each case, the goal is to collect evidence to determine who the perpetrator is, how the crime was committed and their motive. This is presented as a combination of a third-person view showing the characters at the crime scene and through animated close-up images of the characters, annotated by text dialog. In some cases, still images are used to highlight dramatic scenes. The gameplay is very similar to the other Ace Attorney games, with investigation phases and rebuttal phases, which take the place of the previous cross-examination phases. In each of the five cases, the game alternates between these two phases until the case is resolved; the player generally has the option to save the game between each set of Investigation/Rebuttal phases. The player is given a meter, similar in function to a health bar, that tracks how well Edgeworth’s thoughts stay on track; making mistakes in the Logic, Deduction, or Rebuttal sections can lead to losing some |

American Football Venues in Idaho: Kibbie Dome, Bronco Stadium, Neale Stadium, Holt Arena $8.87 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Kibbie Dome – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The stadium was built in stages and took several years to complete. Originally, the new football stadium was to be outdoors and seat over 23,000 spectators, with an adjacent 10,000 seat indoor arena for basketball. The PCAA conference had been launched in 1969 and Idaho was attempting to join, but political wrangling in the state legislature and subsequent budget cuts caused a change in the scope of the stadium project. This ensured that Idaho could not make the move to the PCAA; the Vandals remained in the Big Sky Conference with the other state schools, Idaho State and new member Boise State. The revised plan was for a smaller capacity football stadium, to be enclosed to allow use as a basketball arena (and indoor track and tennis as well). This multi-purpose concept had been recently used at Idaho State in Pocatello, where the Minidome (now Holt Arena) had opened in 1970. Construction on the concrete grandstands started in February 1971, after a fire destroyed the previously condemned wooden Neale Stadium in November 1969. The stadium, which opened in 1936, had been condemned the summer before the 1969 season, and the Vandal football team played its limited home schedule for the next two seasons at WSU’s Rogers Field in Pullman. After a fire significantly damaged Rogers Field’s south grandstand in April 1970, WSU moved all of its 1970 and 1971 home games to Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, but the Vandals remained at Rogers in Pullman for four “home” games in 1970. The Vandals’ game with WSU on September 19th in Spokane was dubbed the “Displaced Bowl.” A lopsided 44-16 win for the Cougars, it was WSU’s only victory in a stretch of 22 games. Back in Moscow, the new “Idaho Stadium” was not quite re… More: |

Excerpt: • Appearances (Goals) Hugo Meisl (16 November 1881 (Maleschau, Bohemia) – 17 February 1937), brother of the journalist Willy Meisl, was the multi-lingual football coach of the famous Austrian ‘Wunderteam’ of the early 1930s, as well as a referee. Meisl was born to a Jewish famiy in Bohemia, starting out as a bank clerk after moving to Vienna in 1893 but soon developed an interest in football finding employment as an administrator with the Austrian Football Association when he was in his early 40s, rising to the position of General Secretary. In the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Meisl even turned out as a match referee. He had previously refereed the first international match between Hungary and England on 10 June 1908. Meisl’s enthusiasm for the game resulted in the development of a Central European club tournament: the Mitropa Cup, the development of the Central European International Cup and the development of professional League football in Austria in 1924. His interest in football lead him to develop friendships throughout Europe most notably with Vittorio Pozzo in Italy and Herbert Chapman in England. Another English coach, Jimmy Hogan, who worked in Vienna, helped Meisl develop a technique for dispensing with aerial passing and placing emphasis on groundwork. Meisl became coach of the Austrian national side in 1913 alongside Heinrich Retschury, assuming full control in 1919 and oversaw their rise to prominence in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The 14-match unbeaten run of the Austrian national side from 12 April 1931 until 7 December 1932 placed the |

Bakersfield Bears Players: Larry Bowa, Rick Wise, Mike Marshall, Grant Jackson, George Williams $8.31 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: As player As manager Lawrence Robert Bowa (born December 6, 1945 in Sacramento, California) is a former middle infielder, playing mainly as a shortstop, and manager in Major League Baseball who played primarily for the Philadelphia Phillies. He is currently the third-base coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bowa was born on Sacramento, California, the son of Paul Bowa, a former minor-league infielder and manager in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. While at C. K. McClatchy High School, Bowa tried out but never made the school’s baseball team. After graduation, Bowa went to Sacramento City College where he started, and was expected to go in the MLB Draft, but didn’t. The Philadelphia Phillies were the only Major League team interested in Bowa. They sent a local scout, Eddie Bockman to watch Bowa play in a doubleheader, only for Bowa to be thrown out of the game for arguing. Borkman had a winter league team in the area and offered Bowa a chance to play. Bowa played well and signed with the Phillies for a $2,000 bonus. Characterized by his “soft” hands, strong arm, and fiery personality, he won two Gold Glove Awards and led the National League in fielding percentage six times, then a league record. He retired with the NL record for career games at shortstop (2222) and the Major League records for fielding average in a career (.980) and a single season (.991, in 1979), and was also among the career leaders in assists (sixth, 6857) and double plays (fourth, 1265); his records have since been broken, though he retains the NL mark for career fielding average. Apart from his fielding achievements, he was a switch-hitter, batting .280 or better four times (.305 in 1975); he also had nine seasons with 20 or more stolen bases. From his… More: |
